How to Load a Dumpster | Maximize Space Safely

Most people rent a dumpster, start tossing stuff in, and realize halfway through that they're running out of room. The problem isn't the dumpster size — it's how they loaded it.

Loading a dumpster the right way can save you hundreds of dollars. You'll fit more in, avoid overage fees, and finish your project without a hitch. Here's how to do it.

Start With Flat, Heavy Items on the Bottom

The first things going in should be your heaviest, flattest items. Think plywood sheets, old doors, tabletops, drywall panels, and flooring. Lay them flat across the bottom of the dumpster to create a solid base.

This does two things:

  • Keeps a level foundation so everything stacks evenly above it
  • You get the heavy items out of the way at the easiest point
If you throw bulky, oddly shaped items in first, you'll have gaps and air pockets that waste space for the entire load.

Break Down Everything You Can

This is the single biggest space-saver most people skip. Before anything goes in the dumpster:

  • Disassemble furniture — take legs off tables, remove shelves from bookcases and break the bookcase down, pull drawers out of dressers and break them down to pieces
  • Break down boxes — flatten every cardboard box. A stack of flattened boxes takes up 10% of the space compared to tossed-in boxes
  • Cut long items — 2x4s, pipes, and trim longer than 12 feet should be cut down
  • Remove doors from frames — hinges take 30 seconds to remove and save a ton of space
A homeowner in Mason recently told us they thought they'd need a 15 or 20 yard dumpster for their basement cleanout. They weren't sure what size to go with, but after taking our advice on breaking everything down, they rented and filled a 15 yard dumpster, saving them $40 over renting a 20 yard dumpster.

Fill Gaps as You Go

Think of loading a dumpster like packing a suitcase — you want zero wasted space. After you place larger items:

  • Stuff trash bags into gaps between furniture and along the walls
  • Pour loose debris (broken drywall, insulation, small wood scraps) into the crevices
  • Slide flat items vertically into narrow spaces along the sides
Every gap you fill means more room for the next load.

Don't Go Above the Fill Line

Every dumpster has a fill line — the top edge of the container walls. Loading above this line means:

  • We can't legally haul it — Ohio DOT weight and height regulations apply
  • You'll pay an overload fee — or we'll need to remove items before pickup
  • It's dangerous — we have a tarp, but debris can fly off during transport
If you're getting close to the fill line and still have more to toss, it might be time to order a second dumpster rental.

What Size Dumpster Do You Actually Need?

If you're still deciding on a size, here's what most homeowners in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky use:

  • 10-yard (starts at $207) — single room cleanout, small garage, yard waste
  • 15-yard (starts at $207) — full basement or garage cleanout, small renovation
  • 20-yard (starts at $207) — whole house cleanout, large renovation, estate cleanout
When in doubt, go one size up. The price difference is less than the cost of ordering a second dumpster.

Frequently Asked Questions

If I go over the top, is it an issue? We are not huge sticklers, as long as the load is not more than a foot over. We have a tarp that goes over the load, but it needs to cover the whole load, so nothing flies out of the dumpster on the road.

What if my dumpster is full but I still have stuff? You can give us call/text at (513) 995-1639. We can swap it out for an empty dumpster, within 3 hours if you prefer. Many homeowners in Anderson Township and Loveland schedule a swap halfway through big projects, and we put you at the top of our delivery list.

Can I load the dumpster over multiple days? Absolutely. Our standard rental is a 1-3 day rental, but we do have other rental periods. Take your time and load it right rather than rushing. A same-day dumpster delivery gets it to your driveway fast, then you load at your own pace.

Is there a weight limit? Yes — all of our dumpster rentals, except for our concrete dumpster, all have weight limits in the dumpster rental offers listed. Now, we try to keep our offers as affordable as possible, while keeping the highest weight limits available to service all customers. Check out our concrete and heavy debris dumpster page if you'd like a flat-rate for your concrete dumpster, no matter how much weight is put in it.
